Eric:

UNC has a hybrid clinical test program, as does Dr Roland at NYU.

BUT! THere’s a caveat, which was just relayed to me by a patient of Roland’s & Bill Shapiro, who is the senior audie at that program.

Essentially, if your hearing loss is progressive, you may fall within the criterion for a hybrid now; but they’ll have to go digging in deeper in sevral years.

Two ways to look at “revision” surgery:

1) Just a little of anesthetic & stitches;

2) Having to do the aural rehab all over — At least 3 months.

really enjoyed reading about your struggle and the hybrid implant. i have familial, slowly progressive high frequency loss that begins at about age 40. i’m now 46 with bte’s and doing well, but i have already contacted dr. gantz in Iowa and I am very encouraged for this breakthrough technology for people with ski slope loss that HAVE PREVIOUSLY HAD NO HOPE. even if i have to fly to europe to have the procedure, i would. i want to remain in the world of the hearing! thanks again for sharing your story.

A great post! I love the fact that ALL those who cannot hear regardless of their hearing loss history are welcomed in HLAA and ALDA….both of those organizations are great!
